Written in the aftermath of a breakup, where I was not the one doing the breaking up, it captures the confusing push-pull of mixed messages and maybe even what happens when I fall for a version of someone whose hiding all their other parts.
For those of you who have experienced the arduous journey of seeking a partner and the woes of dating, or if you can relate to this in any of your relationships, romantic or otherwise, I’d love to hear what resonates for you in the comments.
Imaginary Magnets
Identical charcoal, smooth and flat I only know which side you’re showing me When we get close enough to know If I'm being pulled or pushed Show me your other side Let me get close I want to feel the pull Not resist the push Spinning at your angles My needle bounces As you twirl around me Tugging at my force Directions at all sides Where do I go? This field around us firing my iron Where is my north? But maybe you’re not who I thought And we aren’t what I hoped This magnet isn’t real My compass following imaginary ghosts Be still. Don’t move. Stay away. Let me heal.
